The Nye Committee Ruling
Many arms factories were accused of tricking the U.S. into entering WWI because they made so much profit from manufacturing weapons. As a result, more people became isolationist. -
The Neutrality Acts
The Neutrality Acts mainly focused on prohibiting the sale of arms to other countries at war. If a country bought products from America, they had to send their own ships and pay in cash. This was known as "cash and carry". This helped keep the U.S. out of WWII. -
WWII Begins
Britain and France declared war on Germany when Germany invaded Poland. -
Destroyers for Bases
The U.S. gave 50 destroyers to Britain. Because it was not a sale, the Neutrality Act supposedly did not apply. As a result, the public began to favor giving aid to allies at war. -
Lend-Lease Act
This gave the U.S. the right to lend or lease arms to any country that was necessary to the survival of the U.S. This included any country that was fighting the Nazis. -
Hemespheric Defense Zone
This zone made the western hemisphere neutral. It was created as a way to help the British while still remaining neutral. In this way, the U.S. Navy could sail across the Western Hemisphere and give away the position of Germany while still occupying their neutral zone. -
The Atlantic Charter
An agreement between Churchill and Roosevelt on what a postwar world would look like. It included democracy, free trade, nonaggression, and freedom of the seas. -
Pearl Harbor Attack
To help their allies, the U.S. restricted the sale of certian materials to Japan. This weakened Japan in the war. As a result, Japan decided to attack the U.S. naval base on Pearl Harbor, hoping to eliminate them as a threat. The U.S. declared war on Japan.
