    The Irish Free State went its own way and in 1949 became the Republic of Ireland.

    The Troubles

    Conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles occasionally spilled over into the Republic of Ireland.

  • Ireland joined the EEC (now the European Union)

    Irish War of Independence led to the south seceding from the UK in 1922, while Northern Ireland opted to remain.

  • Mary Robins is Elected

    Mary Robinson is elected President of Ireland. She is the first woman president of the country.

  • Good Friday Agreement

    On 10 April 1998, something called the Good Friday Agreement (or Belfast Agreement) was signed. This agreement helped to bring to an end a period of conflict in the region called the Troubles.

  • The Irish Car Bombings

    The IRA paramilitary group was not happy with the Good Friday agreement and decided to express their opposition to it through acts of violence. The car bombings were the largest single bombing in the Northern Ireland conflict claiming the lives of 29 people.
