  • Cummings Requests Hearing on Data Security Breach at JPMorgan Chase

    Washington, DC —Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to Chairman Darrell Issa requesting that the Committee hold a bipartisan hearing to examine a recent data security breach at JPMorgan Chase that reportedly exposed the personal information of approximately 76 million households and 7 million small businesses.

    Washington, D.C. —Following two classified briefings previously provided by the Postal Service to staff of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Ranking Member Elijah E.   • Democratic staff began to conduct briefings with the Chief Information Officers and others at different companies and agencies. To date, approximately 16 briefings have been led by Democratic staff.

    Washington, D.C.—In light of reports that more than 500 million records have been compromised due to data security breaches in the U.S. financial sector over the past year, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings and Senator Elizabeth Warren sent letters today to 16 banks, investment firms, and other financial service providers requesting information about recent data breaches and seeking detailed briefings from corporate IT security officers.
  • Cummings Requests Information from Sony on North Korean Cyber Attack

    Washington, D.C. (Dec. 23, 2014)—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to the Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment requesting information about a devastating cyber attack in which hackers believed to be from North Korea stole soon-to-be-released films and the personal information of over 47,000 current and former employees, including their social security numbers and healthcare records.
  • Cummings Requests Information on Recent Data Breach at KeyPoint

    Washington, D.C.—Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, sent a letter to the CEO of KeyPoint Government Solutions, Inc., one of the largest providers of background investigation services for the federal government, requesting documents and a briefing from the Chief IT Security Officer regarding a major data breach.
  • The Oversight Committee voted unanimously to include in its oversight plan a review of the policies, strategies, and roles in cybersecurity in both the government and private sectors.

    The Information Technology Subcommittee held a hearing to examine cybersecurity threats faced by private sector entities in the retail, financial, and heath care sectors, responses to those threats, and recommendations to improve federal cybersecurity policies.
  • Full Committee Hearing

    The Committee held a hearing, requested by Ranking Member Cummings, to examine the information security risks related to third-party contractors and vendors and the federal government’s efforts to enhance the security of its information systems.
  • Full Committee OPM Hearing

    The Committee held the first in a series of two hearings, on the cyberattacks against the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which was the latest in a series of attacks against our nation’s public and private sector entities, including against federal agencies, the healthcare industry, the financial sector, and retail companies. According to OPM, the cyberattack began in December 2014, but was not detected until April 2015.
  • Full Committee OPM Hearing

    The Committee held the second in a series of two hearings, on the cyberattacks against the OPM. At the request of Ranking Member Cummings, this hearing was expanded to focus on data breaches involving two of the largest providers of background investigation services for OPM, KeyPoint Government Solutions and USIS, both of which compromised the sensitive personal information of tens of thousands of federal employees.
  • Reducing the Effects of the Cyber Attacks on OPM Victims Emergency Response Act of 2015

    Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and eight National Capital Region cosponsors introduced the RECOVER Act (Reducing the Effects of the Cyber Attacks on OPM Victims Emergency Response Act of 2015) to provide free lifetime identity theft protection coverage to the more than 22.1 million current, former and prospective federal employees whose personnel data has been compromised by widespread Office of Personnel Management (OPM) data breaches.
