THis allowed for products from the east to be transported west of the Appalacian Mountains. It is still used today but is used mostly by recreational watercraft and not commercial.

The steel plow had a signiicant effect on American society because now farmers in the west could plow easier because the plow made of wood in the east would keep breaking. This was becuase the soil was different in the two regions. It is not used today and now machines can do the same thing ten times faster over a massive distance.
