Internal Changes During Pregnancy

    Conception
    A man's sperm meets and enters the egg which causes the egg t all the chromosomes that it needs to start dividing it's cells. Within three days, the egg will attach to the wall of the uterus and will remain there till birth. The placenta also being to form at this point.
  • Month 1

    Month 1
    The baby starts to develop the basic structure for his neck and face. Several organs start to develop such as the stomach, liver, and lungs. Organs that are were developing like blood vessels will continue to develop.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    The baby's arms and legs are developing. The fingers and toes are becoming longer and more distinct. The baby is over 1/2 an inch. Their nose and ears start to form. The baby's organs are developed; however, they aren't functioning yet. By the end of this month, the baby is a fetus.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    The baby has hands, toes, fingers, arms, and legs. Your baby's gender is also developed; however, its to early to see clearly on an ultrasound. The baby ranges in size from three to four inches. The liver produces bile. The circulatory system is fully functional.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    The fetus develops air passage ways in the lungs; however, they aren't functional yet. The baby grows finger nails. The umbilical cord is growing and supplying nutrients to the baby. During this stage, the gender of the baby can now be determined with the ultrasound. The baby's bladder is also formed and functional. Bone development will occur in the skull and with some larger bone structures. During this stage the baby will grow quickly.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    The baby starts to develop muscles. This is the time period called the "Quickening" where the baby will start to move around a lot more. Hair begins to grow on your baby's head and lanugo is formed around your baby's skin to protect it. The baby's skin is covered with a whitish coating called vernix caseosa which protects it from the amniotic fluid.
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    The baby inner ear is fully developed which allows it to hear and react to sounds. The baby still continues to move around a lot in this stage of pregnancy. The baby's eye is formed, but doesn't have an iris. The eye lids are formed and the baby will start opening and closing their eyes. The baby will also increase rapidly in weight due fat deposition under skin, and muscle development.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    Baby will react to sounds. The baby is about 14 inches long and weighs over two pounds. The baby can respond to light, pain, and sound. The baby will continue to grow in size and move around. Your baby could survive if born prematurely.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    Most internal systems of well developed. The lungs are also developed, but may not be fully functional. The baby weighs about 5 pounds and should continue to gain weight. The baby will continue to build body fat reserves. The brain continues to develop as well as the fetus.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    All of the baby's organs are developed and should be functional. The baby will rotate itself (hopefully) into the correct position for the birth. The baby will grow to be between typically between 6-8 pounds and will also increase in length by about 2 inches. The baby will be less active during this time period. The baby will start practicing blinking and most of your baby's downy hair, lanugo, and vernix, are disappearing. Also your baby is making antibodies to protect itself after it is born.
