    European Explorers bring Slaves to the Americas

    Between the 16th and 19th century, it was believed Africans were born to be slaves. When Europeans started to settle in America, African slaves were shipped across the Atlantic to serve as slaves in the New World
  • Cottin Gin Created

    Many slaves in the South worked in cotton fields, but it was a hard job trying to get the pure cotton and get rid of the leaves and plants within the cotton. Cotton was in high demand in America and there were many fields in the South, but Eli Whitney finally invented a machine that got rid of the plants within the cotton. Instead of this limiting the work in cotton fields, it increased it.
  • Slavery Ends in Great Britian

    In 1833 and '34, the British Empire declared a law that erased slavery from all of the British Empire, India, Canada, Australia etc. This could well have possibly influenced the ending of slavery in America.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 was a decision that stated two things:
    1) California was to become a free state, slave trade was to be banned fromWashington D.C.
    2) Congress would not pass laws concerning the land won during the war with Mexico, and there would ne a stronger law to help catch runaway slaves.

    This law stated that saves who escaped from their masters and caught would be returned to their masters without even a trial in court.

    American Civil War

    The North and South of America could not agree on many important topics , most topics surounding the broad topic of slavery in America. A war between the North and South began and lasted for over four years, until the North won and Abraham Lincoln resolved peace.
  • Emancipation Proclomation

    This law was signed by Abraham Lincoln in on January 1st, 1863. It said that all slaves in Confederate territory were to be freed. The law was not passed by Congress.
  • Slavery Ends in the United States

    The Civil War of America was a fight that was caused by a number of reasons, but one was the freedom of slaves. The North believed slavery should end in America, while the South believed slavery should continue. Slavery began to end during 1864 and 1865, but on December 6, 1865, the final law was passed and slavery ended in the United States.
  • U.S. ratifies 13th amendment to the Constitution.

    The 13th amendment to a while to be enforced, but on December 6th, 1865, it was adopted. The law said slavery was illegal unless it was a legal punishment. This proved to be a pivotal moment in American law, and lead to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

    Jim Crow Laws

    These were a set of laws that said African American people were not allowed to use the same facilities as white men in the South of America. It also said black people would be "seperate but equal" to white men, but as this turned out, it is not true.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    This was a landmark case at the Supreme Court which ended with a statement saying black people and white people were not allowed to go to the same public schools.

    Freedom Riders

    Some black students who were fed up of the hatred toward them started an inspiring movement in 1961. Many students boarded a bus that traveled from Washingto D.C to New Orleans, into Birmingham, Alabama and finally into Mississippi, where they were arrested. It was a protest against the racism toward them and turned people's attention on.
  • Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

    Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a black American who worked towards making black and white men equal. He gave many moving speeches and has some unbelievable quotes. he is one of the most respected men of all time and his legacy greatly impacts our world today. Early morning, April 4th 1968, aged just 39, Luther King was shot dead on a balcony of a motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The killer of this legend is still unkown, however, he is the symbol of almost no racism in America.
  • Slavery Ends in Mauritania

    Mauritania became the last country to abolish slaveryin 1981. However, despite the fact that it is illegal, around 10%-20% of people in Mauritania are slaves.
