  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown v. Board of Education was a case that was centered on the segregation of schools in the 50s and 60s during the Civil Rights Movement. It was unanimously decided that segregation in the school system was against the constitution. Although it was about race, it was later argued that it could be used as an example to be an outlet that could be used for important changes in Special Education as well because it demonstrated equality and advocated rights.
  • John F. Kennedy Initiative

    John F. Kennedy Initiative
    (Public Law 88-164) John F. Kennedy created a law allowing for increased funding to help people educating those with special needs. It was important because it expanded resources and knowledge for their workers.
  • Mills v. Board of Education

    Mills v. Board of Education
    Mills v. Education was a case where 7 children were turned away from public education as a result of their special needs and the school lacking the resources to take care of their needs. This case was ruled as no public institution being able to deny a child from public education. This ruling served as an outlet to increase funding to sufficiently take care of their needs and led to other important legislation.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children

    Education for All Handicapped Children
    This act followed the cases Brown v. Board and Mills v. Board. It made it to where all handicapped children were provided with adequate education that could meet what is required of their disability. This was important because it paved the way for Individualized Educational Programs and the evolution of Special Services.
  • Transition to IDEA

    Transition to IDEA
    The Education for all Handicapped Children Act changed into IDEA, or Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This made it to where all children with disabilities were provided their own unique individualized education programs with increased parent participation, goals and other services provided within the public education system. This is important because it helped solidify more special services and continue the evolution and improvement in the system.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004
    This act reamended the old one of 1986. It even further promoted the unique individualized education programs in schools as well as making more independent living and employment a bigger focal point of the bill. In addition to this, they also ensure that teachers are highly qualified in order to ensure quality education.
