    The American Enightenment

    The American Enlightenment was a time of new ideas and changes in society. It started many new ideas and involved many philisophers, notably Locke, Rousseau, and Montesquieu. This time perios involved the American Revolution and involved the colonies fighting the British for their independence and the Enlightenment gets a 10/10 because all of the ideas of the philosophers are in our country's memory forever.

    Link for PictureThe Proclamation Line of 1763 was issued by King George III when the French and Indian War ended. The colonists were not allowed to settle anywhere west of the proclamation line and the Appalachian Mountains. It was issued to avoid conflicts with the Native Americans. Colonists already living west would have to return to the east. this law is a 6/10 because it limited the area of settlement.

    Link for Picture The Stamp Act of 1765 was the second tax on the colonists, proceded by the Sugar Act of 1764. The Stamp Act required all documents like mail and newspapers to have a stamp on it. The colonists were not very happy and stopped buying British goods, which resulted in the British reversing the Stamp Act. This act is a 7/10 because it started a revolt and upset in the colonists.

    Link for Picture The Boston Massacre was one of the first events where the colonists and British fought. It wasn't really a war yet just a warning. A group of colonists protested against the British in Boston and resulted in five colonists' deaths. This event is a 8/10 because it was one of the first fights leading to the revolution and left alot of colonists upset.

    Link for PictureThe Tea Act was the third tax on the colonies by the British which made the colonies even more angry. It made the colonies revolt with the Boston Tea Party. This event is a 7/10 because the colonies got another tax and they protested by throwing tea off into the Boston Harbor.

    Link for Picture The Boston Tea Party of 1773 was a major event leading to the revolution. A group called the Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians and and threw massive amounts of tea into the Boston Harbor. This event is a 9/10 because this made the British very angry and unforgiving.

    Link for Picture The Intolerable Acts of 1774 were a set of laws enforced by the British in response to the Boston Tea Party. The laws include the Quartering Act which forces colonists to house and feed English soldiers, the Blockade of Boston which cut off all ships from coming to Boston, and no trials by a jury. These acts were a 9/10 because this is when the colonists snapped were going to declare independence from Britain.

    Link for Picture The First Continental Congress of 1774 was a meeting of the 12 colonies in Philadelphia. They discussed the Intolerable Acts and how unfair it was and they sent a letter to King George III asking for the acts to be repealed, which didn't happen. This was a 7/10 because it wasn't as strong as the Declaration of Independence but it still sent a message.

    Link for Picture The fight at Lexington and Concord Massachusetts, both on 1775, was the second shooting of the Road to Revolution. It happened because the British assumed that weapons were being held in Concord. The British marched over to Massachusetts and met with colonial militia at Lexington. The British defeated the colonials at both Lexington and Concord. This event was a 8/10 because it starts the Declaration.

    Link for Picture The Second Continental Congress of 1776 was the second meeting of the colonies and they were discussing the battles in Massachusetts. They wanted a declaration to proclaim their independence and set up a committe to write the declaration. This event was a 8/10 because their ideas during this meeting were very impactful for the making of the declaration.

    Link for Picture The Declaration of Independence was a very important message to Britain that stated their right to freedom. Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration, originally supposed to be Benjamin Franklin, and included ideas from Locke, Rousseau, and Montisquieu. It also includes 27 examples of harsh treatment from the British. This document was a 10/10 because it was what called the war on and is a very important piece of history.
