California Flag
1846 The original bear flag was first raised in June of 1846. This flag was a symbol of revolt against the Mexican rule. Unfortunately the flag was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1906. (See further down the California time-line for our current day flag adoption). -
James W. Marshall first discovered gold in California at Sutter's Mill. The news of gold brought hundreds of thousands of people to California. The California Gold Rush lasted until 1855.

The treaty that ended the Mexican American War was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It was signed in February of 1848. This made what we know as California today a part of the United States

California began seeking statehood in 1849. California entered the Union as a fee non-slave state by the Compromise of 1850. California became the 31st state of the United States on September 9, 1850.

Sacramento was able to be claimed as state capital in 1854. Also, the first railroad in the state connected in Sacramento.

Our current day flag was adopted by the legislature in 1911. It is a replication of the original bear flag that was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake.
