    Beginning to sail south

    This is when Europeans began to sail towards the south around the content of Africa in attempt to reach all of the resources they needed and wanted

    Selling goods

    In the beginning of the 1500’s Europeans began to sell African guns and goods made by themselves. They traded that stuff for slaves.

    Beginning to build trading posts

    This is when the Europeans began to build trading posts for trading their good so they can get slaves
  • Taking over

    Now, the Europeans are taking over a lot of countries for the recourses the countries provided that they needed and wanted.

    In the beginning of the 1900’s Europeans had almost taken over all of Africa!

    In the mid 1900’s during WWII, Africans began to rebel against colonization.

    South Africa gained independence from Great Britain

    In the 1920’s, Kenya began a political organization to fight for freedom from Great Britain.

    In 1930, Italy took over the last remaining country which was Ethiopia
  • Kwame Nkrumah

    In the 1940’s Kwame Nkrumah introduced the idea of all Black Africans worldwide.

    White South Africans made apartheid law.

    Sudan gained its independence from Great Britain
  • Leading to Civil Wars

    People in the south went against northern rule leading to two civil wars.

    Ghana will gain it’s independence on 1957. There would be freedom for the countries.

    In 1960 Nigeria became independent after having a rough time with the British

    Belgium Congo became independent!

    In 1963, it took a couple years, but, Kenya finally became independent.

    Mandela got arrested and sentenced to life
    in prison.

    Joseph Mobutu gained power. He renamed the country Zaire. He also ruled it uninterrupted for 32 years.

    Nigeria suffered from violence with various groups. In 1976 the Igbo people tried to declare themselves independent.

    Klerk announced the end of apratheid and
    released Nelson Mandela from prison.

    Mandela and Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize!

    South Africa held its first open elections that’s when Nelson Mandela was elected the new president.

    The country kept having to experience violence until Hutu began to engage in genocide against the Tutsi people.

    Now the fight is coming to an end.

    People in Tunisia began to search for a more democratic government.
  • Recognizing Independence

    Sudan recognized South Sudan’s independence!!
