IEP Process

  • Invitations

    Invitations
    Send home parent and student invitations to IEP meeting, including date, time and meeting place. This invitation must be sent home at least 10 days prior to the IEP meeting date.
  • Prior Written Notice

    Prior Written Notice
    A Prior Written Notice must also be sent home to parents. The Prior Written Notice outlines the purpose of the IEP meeting as well as proposed changes that could possibly be made to the students education plan. (Proposed or refused action)
  • Notify General Education Teachers

    Notify General Education Teachers
    It is required that at least one general education teacher of the student be present of their meeting. SPED teacher should notify all general education teachers who have the student in class of the meeting date. Google Calendar is a great way to send invities to teachers and administration to get quick responses of their acceptance or decline of the meeting invitation.
  • Rights for Parent(s)/Student

    Rights for Parent(s)/Student
    Parents and students must be given a copy of their rights at lease once a year. It is ideal to give these rights to the parent(s) at the beginning of each IEP meeting.
  • IEP Team

    IEP Team
    The IEP Team must include a parent, LEA, Special Education teacher, General Education teacher, and student.
  • Conference Summary Log

    Conference Summary Log
    During the meeting, a conference summary log should be completed. Some school districts do not require a summary of the IEP meeting but it still a good practice to keep to make sure all import information is documented.
  • Discuss ALL Sections of IEP

    Discuss ALL Sections of IEP
    During the meeting, all aspects of the IEP should be discussed. Changes should be noted on a draft of the previous years IEP so that appropriate changes can be made before new IEP is finalized.
  • Signatures

    Signatures
    All attend the meeting must sign the signature page of the IEP. In some school districts, all who attend are also required to sign the Conference Summary Log. Bottom line, MAKE SURE EVERYONE SIGNS EVERYTHING!
  • Finalize IEP

    Finalize IEP
    Finalize IEP using notes taken during the IEP meeting. Make sure the IEP runs a full year. Get rid of all those yellow alerts and red stop signs as soon as possible!
  • Parent Copy of IEP

    Parent Copy of IEP
    After IEP has been finalized, send home a parent copy of the students IEP for the parent to keep.
