    Germany Invades Budapest
    German troops take over Budapest. Bubi soon returns home but Elli's parents advise him to return. "The next morning headlines roar: WE ARE LIBERATED! HITLER'S GLORIOUS ARMY IS IN BUDAPEST!" (Jackson 21)
  • Schools are Closed.

    Schools are Closed.
    Due to Germany taking over such a vast amount of land in such a short amount of time people began taking percautions. Schools such as Elli's were then closed. "Her voice broke, she swallowed hard " Our school is closed, as of now."" (Jackson 22)
  • The Yellow Star

    The Yellow Star
    Jews were ordered to wear a yellow star that was of a cetian size on their clothing and paint a yellow star on the outside of their house as well. This came as either an embarassment or a symbol of pride to all. "The yellow star is a Jew badge!" (Jackson 30)
  • Forced Labor Camp

    Forced Labor Camp
    Elli's father is taken to a forced labor camp in Hungrey. Most men that were able to work were taken first thus her father left. "Mommy was looking forward to labor camp, but did not think daddy would be taken away." (Jackson 53-54)
  • The Ghetto

    The Ghetto
    Elli and her family were taken to the Dunaszerdahely Ghetto. Here Elli gives her notebook full of poems to a friendly soldier. "Don't worry, Elli Friedmann, I'll take care. No one will find out." (Jackson 68)
  • Auschwitz

    Auschwitz
    Elli arrives in Auschwitz along with her mother and aunt. Her Aunt is seperated from them and they never see her again. "A huge sign catches my eye : AUSCHWITZ. The pain in my stomach sends a violent wave of nausea up my gullet." (Jackson 71)
  • Tatoos

    Tatoos
    Elli and her mother recieve tatoos as their new identities. At this point they do not realize how brainwashed they are until her mother uses this as her actual name. "I notice the tatoos on one line are smaller and neater then the rest, and once again I drag Mommy to the end of that line, a much longer one." (Jackson 122)
  • Liberation!

    Liberation!
    Elli and other prisoners are freed from the trains by the U.S Army. Liberation is now right around the corner for the Jews. "Freedom at last. Why don't I feel it? Why don't I feel it?" (Jackson 205)
  • Fathers Death

    Fathers Death
    Bubi recieves news of his fathers death and must share this with Elli and his mother. Elli is heart broken. "There is nothing to keep us here any longer." (Jackson 211)
  • U.S.A

    U.S.A
    As Bubi prepares to attend school in New York the family decides that they will stick together. They all pick up the pieces of their shattered lives and head over seas. "America is final. America, will you be my home?"
