Melbourne was eventually settled and the land was subdivided. The first public land sales were held shortly after.

Melbourne block 88 was purchased by John Dight, which included 26 acres of land along the Yarra River. It was purchased at the Port Phillip land sales for 481 pounds.

Dight was in the milling business and owned a mill near Campbell Town in NSW called Ceres. In April her notified his customers through the Sydney Herald that he was leaving for Port Phillip.

The first ever steam powered mill was made in Melbourne by John Dight and later, he also constructed the first water powered mill.

The Dight family decided to abandon the flour milling business.

The property of the flour mill was later sold to Edwin Trennery and was subsequently subdivided.

The original mill remained unoccupied until Gillespie, Aitken, and Scott and they operated under the name of 'Yarra Falls Roller Flour Mills' and they constructed new mills and associated buildings on the land.

A while after the new mill and associated buildings were constructed, the enterprise was sold to the Melbourne Flour Milling Company.

The mill took new owners for the final time and was destroyed by fire. The mill ruins can still be found at Dights Falls today.

The first documented reconstruction occurred when a part of timber weir was washed away in flood waters.

Yet another breach of the weir occurred after heavy rainfall and strong flooding.

Melbourne water eventually constructed a rock fishway which allowed the fish to move around weir.
