A black woman who stood her ground against the white man on December 1st of 1955. Rosa Parks is known as the “mother” of the civil rights movement. She refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man which was considered a violation of the segregation laws. Her action led to a huge protest led by 26-year-old Martin Luther king. Black citizens boycotted the bus company.

On October 4th 1957 Sputnik was the first artificial satellite successfully placed in orbit around Earth. It was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at Tyuratam. Sputnik is a Russian word for companion. The sputnik was the first satellite of four.

The Bay of Pigs aerial bombings began on April 17, 1961. The bombings took place at key airports two days before to disable the Cuban air force.

President Kennedy was killed during the height of the cold war when the world was on the brink of a nuclear disaster known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. President Kennedy was murdered when riding through Dealey Plaza in Dallas on Friday November 22, 1963. Many photos and films captured Kennedy’s assassination. The most famous film of the assassination was the Zapruder Film. The President was rushed to the Parkland Hospital where efforts failed to keep him alive.

- On July 16, 1969 the Apollo 11 blasted off caring Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Four days after the Apollo 11 blasted off Neil was the first man to step on the moon. Neil and Edwin walked around for hours doing experiments and picking up moon dirt and rocks to bring back to earth. Neil and Edwin also put a U.S. flag and a sign on the moon. The two astronauts joined Michael and headed back to earth on July 24, 1969, all three astronauts made it back to earth safely.
