  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    Old Deluder Satan Act
    The Massachusetts Bay Colony passes a law requiring all towns of fifty or more to hire a primary school teacher, and towns of 100 or more to hire a Latin teacher. This event seems to be the beginning of education state wide if not country wide. Note: I could only find the year.
  • Board of Education

    Board of Education
    The Massachusetts state legislature created the first ever Board of Education and appointed Horace Mann to be the secretary to the board. This event created standards and leadership to education that all American educators adhear too.
  • Boston’s Quincy School was built

    Boston’s Quincy School was built
    Boston’s Quincy School was built (the first of the Common Schools), replacing the once used one-room for all ages room. This new style broke students into groups by age and academic ability as well as creating a room for a principal. The teacher was now able to focus on the education of the students while the principal could focus on students who were disrupting the class. This new educational system required more teachers opening the door for women educators. Note: I could only find the year.
  • Catherine Beecher founded the American Women’s Educational Association

    Catherine Beecher founded the American Women’s Educational Association
    Catherine Beecher founded the American Women’s Educational Association in order to advance women to higher status in life. She did not plan that the door she opened would help lead to women gaining rights throughout American; in fact, She hoped it would not. This event helped women to reach for higher education in order to teach but in the long run it set them up for higher education for all. Note: I could only find the year.
  • Morrill Act was established

    Morrill Act was established
    the Morrill Act provided public land to several states in order to set up colleges that benefited agriculture and mechanical studies, it later extended to the Mid-West and the West. It also provided public funding for college for the first time ever. This event spread education establishments throughout our country. It set up tech colleges for agriculture and mechanics. It brought on research for our food and way of life.

    the Nineteenth Amendment was created.
    the Nineteenth Amendment was instituted in the constitution giving women the right to vote. The impact for teachers (being mostly women) was better wages and work conditions. This amendment had created the want to become teachers because although teachers do not make millions of dollars they can still survive and be respected.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    the Brown v. Board of Education removed the previous beliefs of separate but equal earlier established by Plessy v. Ferguson. Separate schools can never be equal if not everyone is allowed to attend. These integrated schools so that there is more cultural diversity allowed in our schools which I believe has led to a more accepting over all American culture. Even if schools cannot be made to integrate, it is still more accepting that they do if people want to.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    As Part of President Johnson's war on poverty, the ESEA started Head Start, gave free lunches to those who qualified, and started programs geared towards special education. This broadened the horizons for all who sought education; it gave hope to those who once had none.
  • How Children Fail

    How Children Fail
    John Holt publishes his book explaining that children fail because they "were bored and confused." Note: I could only find the year.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This event set up tests to try and evaluate knowledge gained by students during their school terms; it is believed that teachers are only teaching what is on the test and neglecting other important informatinon. This program was set in to help disadvantaged students reach the same goals as advanted students.
