  • Establishment of the Perkins School for the Blind

    The school is the first of its kind in the United States. Founded after Dr. John Fisher observed educational practices for blind children in France.

    Founded to promote the advancement of individuals with intellectual disabilities and develop understanding and support through collaboration.

  • The Council for Exceptional Children is Established

    The Council was formed to advance the welfare and education of children with exceptionalities. Playing a key role in advocating for the rights and needs of children with disabilities.

  • National Association for Gifted Children Established

    Supports the education and advocacy for children who are gifted intellectually. Played a crucial role in highlighting their needs and ensuring these students receive programs that match their abilities.

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Not only did this Supreme Court case rule that segregation in schools was unconstitutional, but he paved the way for challenging practices that discriminate against students with disabilities.

  • Learning Disabilities Association of America Established

    Played a major role in advocating for the education of individuals with disabilities, providing resources and instructional strategies for these learners.

  • The Autism Society of America

    Established to improve the lives of students with autism and their families. Advocating for the rights and needs of individuals with autism and promoting awareness and research.

  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    The court ruled that individuals with disabilities have the right to a free and appropriate education, solidifying the rights of individuals with disabilities to a quality education.

  • Education of all Handicapped Children Act

    This is the first version of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. It was signed into law that children with disabilities would receive proper education and mandated that all public schools provide special education to all eligible students.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    This act prohibits the discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Protecting these individuals in all aspects of life and promoting inclusive practices and accessibility in education.

  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    The act was signed into law and expanded the rights and protections of the Education of all Handicapped Children Act. Emphasizing the importance of IEPs, parent involvement and inclusiveness.

    A framework to improve and optimize teaching based on research. An instructional design to working with students who have specific needs and ensures students with disabilities an inclusive classroom.
