  • The First School for Students with Disabilities was Opened

    The First School for Students with Disabilities was Opened
    American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb was opened in Hartford. Manual Communication or sign language was first introduced. It is now called the school of American Deaf and Dumb.
  • The First Special Education Class

    The First Special Education Class
    It was taught by Elizabeth Farrell in New York. Farrell's class consisted of 19 students. Out of the 19 students, 12 had mental disabilities.
  • The Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children
    It formed a goal to unite those interested in education of special needs. CEC is the largest international advocate for improvement of special education. It's dedicated to help improve the educational outcomes for fellow students with disabilities, gifts, and/or talents.

    The Training of Professional Personnel Act
    The goal was to teach educators how to teach students with disabilities. Their purpose was to be the support of improving programs and services. They trained educators for children who were deaf or had hard hearing.

    Division of Handicapped Children and Youth Established
    It was established by president John F. Kennedy. He sent jobs to study international programs for disabled children. He pushed for greater rights for children with disabilities.

    It prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. It does this in programs by federal agency programs receiving financial assistance and employment practiced. The law applies to public elementary and secondary schools.

    It is now known as IDEA. The act was signed by president Gerald Ford. It ensures students with a disability are provided a free public education to meet their needs.

    The program covered children with disabilities from birth to age 2. This program was created state wide. It coordinated services for infants and toddlers with disabilities.

    It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This includes areas of public, Including jobs, schools, and transportation. It is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights.

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The act was signed by president George W. Bush. It was passed in Congress with an overwhelming amount of support. This act helps with the abilities to use federal education funds to help with the improvement of student achievement.
