  • American School For the Deaf

    American School For the Deaf
    The American School for the deaf was the first state supported school for disabled students. It was founded in Hartford, Connecticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc. It is the oldest school for the deaf in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Columbia Institute

    Columbia Institute for the Deaf Dumb and Blind was the first college established for people with disabilities. In 1954 the institution was authorized to confer college degrees. The School was later renamed Gallaudet College after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
  • Beattie v Board of Education

    A student name Merritt Beattie suffered from a disability that caused speech impairment, drooling and paralysis. Supreme Court ruled that school officials could exclude student with disabilities due to causing nausea to teachers. Due to this Beattie was expelled from school
  • Easterseals

    Formerly known as the National Society for Crippled Children, Easterseals is nonprofit organization designed to provide services for people with disabilities. The purpose of these services is to help those with disabilities learn, live work and play.   • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education was a historical Supreme Court case that ruled that "Separation is not equal" and for it to be unconstitutional. This state law allowed there no be no more segregation in schools.

  • Section 504

    Section 504
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on individuals with disabilities and special needs. This law protects those with mental or physical disabilities who are between the ages of 3-22. It also require to have the proper accommodations for the needs of those students to be met.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This act was created to require public schools to use federal funding to least restrictive environments, free education and supplemental services to children with physical and mental disabilities. The acronyms for Education for All Handicapped Children Act are EAHCA or EHA.

    The Americans with Disabilities Act is a law that was signed by President George W. Bush to protect the civil rights of people with disabilities. This act is designed to give those with special needs the same rights as others whether they are in school or are working.   • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
    The purpose of this act is to provide Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to children to have disabilities. It also give parents a voice in their children education.     No Child Left Behind
    The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act is a reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. This law states that in order to receive federal and state funding students must test at a proficient grade level in math, reading and science.
