    The Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to segregate schools by race. This case had a significant impact on influencing special education.
  • Video Games

    Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game.
  • ESEA

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act called for equal access to education and federal funding for primary/secondary education for students in poverty. it was part of the "War on Poverty."
  • PARC

    The Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ruled that students with disabilities be placed in public schools that met their educational needs. A proper evaluation of the school is required.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Students were to be classified as "exceptional." This includes students with mental and learning disabilities and behavioral issues. It is unlawful for The D.C. Board of Education to deny them access to publicly funded educational opportunities.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    States that accepted funding from the federal government must provide equal access to children with disabilities, as well as one free meal per day. States must comply within all of their public schools systems by law.
  • Internet

    Considered the official birthday of the Internet, where computer networks could finally communicate with each other.
  • Handicapped Children’s Protection Act

    Parents of children with disabilities have more say in their child's IEP. Also, provides relief for the prevailing party involving parents with a handicapped child.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Provide all students with access to the same curriculum. States were also allowed to expand the definition of "developmental delay" to include students ages 6-9.
  • IDEA

    Called for early intervention for students, greater accountability, improved educational outcomes, and higher standards for Special Ed. teachers. Required local school districts allocate up to 15% of their special education funds toward general education if a disproportionate number of minority students were put in special education for reasons other than disability.
