History of special education

  • American School of Deaf

    The American School of Deaf was founded in 1817. It was the first permanent school for the deaf in the United States. The American School of Deaf was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc.
  • American School of Deaf

    The American School for the Deaf is the oldest permanent school for the deaf in the United States. The school was founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Dr. Mason Cogswell and Laurent Cierc. I chose this event because it is important to for deaf individuals to receive an education.
  • Association of Instructors of the Blind

    This school is for the deaf and the blind. They offered programs for hearing and visually impaired students. I chose this event because I think it is important to offer school to the deaf and blind.
  • Beattie vs. Board of Education

    In this case a student with physical disabilities was expelled from public school due to the fact that he drooled, had involuntary facial contortions, and had speech problems. Apparently the students condition nauseated the teachers and other students, so it was suggested that he attend a school for deaf students. This case stuck out to me because of how unethical and wrong the decisions made were and I could only imagine how this student felt.
  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children is important because it advocates for all children with disabilities. The CEC provides special educators with professional development, set professional standards, and helps to provide professionals with resources for effective practice.
  • The Cuyahoga County Council for the Retarded Child

    Parents should always advocate for their child. This group was founded by parents who had children with disabilities. The parent were advocating to have their special needs children attend public schools.
  • The Classification of Autism

    Leo Kanner concluded that autism was a neurodevelopment disorder. Kanner was an advocate for children and emphasized that no matter how well developed our criteria each child should be treated as a unique person.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    This case fought for equal education for black children and special needs students. The Supreme Court ruled that separating children based on their race was unconstitutional.
  • Mills vs. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    A lawsuit was filed against the District of Columbia and the court ruled that students with disabilities must be given public education even if students are unable to pay for the cost.
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act

    This law is important for special education because is prohibited discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all aspects of life. Individuals with disabilities are not discriminated against in school, jobs, public life, transportation, and public and private places open to the public.
  • IDEA

    The Individual with Disabilities Education Act is a law that makes free appropriate education available to all students with disabilities. IDEA help to ensure the rights of children with disabilities and parents are protected.
