    When the computer was invented by Charles Babbage in the 1940's this was a complete game changer. When the computer was invented this was the START of social media. Scientist began to create networks between computers.

    CompuServe was a platform where users shared files and access news and events. The difference between CompuServe and other early social media networks was direct contact. It was a large public access platform. It was the layout for other social networking sights such as AOL (America Online)

    BBS was on of the first online meeting places. These were produced by "codes that allowed users to communicate" Users could also download files or games.

    SixDegrees was a social network sight. Users created profiles, invited friends, and look at other users profiles. It was founded in 1997, but ended in 2000. SixDegrees.com was said to be the layout for the social media websites we use today (Facebook, Twitter, etc)

    Friendster was a social media website that focused on a "circle of friends" and build a sense of community with people with similarities in interest. Friendster became a dating site, then a gaming site. After being unsuccessful in the United States, Friendster had a successful run in Indonesia and the Philippines, then closing for good on June 30th 2018

    LinkedIn was a social media site aimed to be used in the professional world. The target audience for LinkedIn was business people. Businesses linking with other bushiness.

    MySpace was a social networking site that was targeted to everyone. The main focus it shifted towards was upcoming musicians and young adults. It was considered "cool" There was something on MySpace for everyone. Which why it was very successful.

    YouTube was created for users to upload video content. Users also could view, rate share, report and subscribe. YouTube runs on user-generated content. YouTube has evolved over the years with their latest add on. YouTube TV which is watching all your favorite tv shows from different networks on YouTube

    Twitter is a social networking site where users would post tweets. Users could post closely to whatever they want in 140 characters or less. Twitter now is used for more outlets such as news, social events. Users could get together and communicate in real time.

    Facebook is perhaps the most popular social networking site we use today. It was founded by college students who wanted to connect with classmates. There's a lot of features to make profiles personable. Facebook has over 1.3 billion active users.
