    School District of Abington Township, Pennsylvania v. Schempp
    U. S. Supreme Court ruled officially that schools may not exercise prayer or use passages from the bible as it was unconstitutional. It impacted our society as many strongly believed that praying was a way of educating or shaping good citizens. However, it’s a controversial issue as it prayer was not inclusive of all religions, especially when some do not use the Bible to pray and or do not pray in English.

    Head Start was created as a preschool education program for children from low-income families. This was derived from the War on Poverty given by Lyndon B. state of the union speech. This was program was the founded to address the effects of poverty and education. The goal is to meet the overall needs of children from emotional, social, nutritional to psychological needs.
  • The Indian Education Act

    The Indian Education Act
    The Indian Education Act becomes law setting forth a comprehensive approach to meeting the needs of American Indian and or Alaska Native students. This event was huge for the Native Indian community as it was a way of adding value to their culture, re-enforcing their beliefs, and promoting their native languages. It was not only a turning point in education but as a community as a whole, as they were to have culture based education within the curriculum.

    The Rehabilitation Act
    This act included the section 504 is a plan developed to assist and aid a student who has an identified disability under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution. These students receive accommodations that will ensure their academic success in a learning environment. This impacted those students that do not fall under the category of a contained special education classroom but yet need a bit of extra assistance or support to thrive academically.

    The Education of All Handicapped Children Act (PL 94-142)
    Its purpose was to provide a free, appropriate public education, suited to the student's individual needs, and offered in the least restrictive way to prove for all handicapped children. There were 4 main focuses when this law passed. Ensure that special education services are available to children, aid parents about educational decisions about services with disabilities, stipulate certain management and auditing requirements, provide federal funds to aid states educate such students.

    Columbine Shooting
    Two Columbine High School seniors massacre a school as they shot and left 15 dead and 23 wounded at the Littleton, Colorado school. This was the first deadliest school shooting. This was a very unfortunate start of the many other massive shootings that have occurred since and a start of gun control advocacy.
  • The Chicago Board Closes 50 Schools

    The Chicago Board Closes 50 Schools
    The Chicago Board of Education closed 49 elementary schools and one high school which due to a 1 billion dollar deficit. This was the largest mass closing in U.S. history. This event impacted over 12,000 students and Mayor Rahm Emanuel promised all of the students attending these closing schools that they would have better opportunities and a better quality education when they attended their new schools. These closures were said to be at these low income and minority children's expense.
  • West Virginia Public Schools Close

    West Virginia Public Schools Close
    Schools in West Virginia were closed due to strikes from teachers. This would be the first that lead to other strikes lead by educators. West Virginia teachers walked out to protest their pay and benefits as they were said to be the lowest salaries in the nation. This was a turning point for educators as they had to take a defiance positioned in order to have a valid negotiation point.
  • National Student Walk Out

    National Student Walk Out
    Thousands of students across the nation walk out of classrooms demanding changes in gun laws. It was the National Walk out day for students. These students walked to protest against gun violence across the united states. All of these students had been impacted by the massive shootings happening at schools. They opted for a strike to share their frustration and voice their concerns against a gun epidemic.
