History of Maricopa Community Colleges

  • Joliet Community College founded in 1901.

    In 1961 Joliet Community College in Illinois becomes the Nation's first junior college.
  • Phoenix Junior College open in 1920.

    Phoenit Junior College opens and woud join MCC in 1962.
  • Arizona Legislature authorizes junior college districts in 1960.

    Th Arizona Legisture authorized the State Board of Directors to create junior college district to be supported by city and state funds.
  • Junior College District is formed in 1962.

    The Junior College District is formed by a vote of 90,000 to 40,000 votes.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964, racial segregation in schools ends.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ends many different forms of discrimination among them racial segreation in schools.
  • Junior College becomes Community College in 1971.

    Ariozna Legislature amends 1960 law to allow junior colleges to become community colleges.
  • Maricopa Community College District is the largest College distrcits in the Country in 1997.

    MCCCD becomes the largest College district in the Country with over 220,000 students.
  • SMCC opens integrated library in 2011.

    SMCC opens the South Mountain Community Library and integrated library operated by the City of Phoenix and SMCC.
  • MCCCD celebrates it's 50th Anniversary in 2012.
