    Gifted Children: Their Nature and Nurture
    Published in 1926, Leta S. Hollingworth’s Gifted Children: Their Nature and Nurture was considered to be the first textbook on the subject of gifted children. She examined the influence of a student’s home environment and their intelligence in relation to their performance on intelligence tests and other tasks.
  • National Defense Education Act

    National Defense Education Act
    NDEA was a science initiative passed by the federal government to provide funding for schools and universities across America. The aim was to increase school children’s knowledge in the areas of science, technology, and engineering in order to make the U.S. more competitive with the Soviet Union and the rest of the world during the great space race.
  • Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 94-142
    Leaving gifted children out, this federal law mandated that the educational needs of all other children with special needs be served in schools. It required that students with special needs receive the same opportunity to be educated that other children received and that a plan was put into place for each of these individual students.

    A Nation at Risk
    A Nation at Risk was a report outlining the failure of America’s most talented students to succeed and compete on a global level. It included suggestions for improving gifted education by raising standards and creating curriculum specifically for gifted students.

    National Excellence: The Case for Developing America's Talent
    Written 10 years later, but similar to the report A Nation at Risk, this report put out by the U.S. Department of Education also included suggestions for improving gifted education. It discussed America’s failure to address the needs of gifted students and the need for more research in gifted education.

    National Gifted Education Standards
    These standards were written to serve two purposes. The first is to guide schools in educating their gifted students. The second is to prepare all teachers equally for the task of educating gifted students.
