History of FACS

  • Justin Smith Morrill: Morrill Act of 1862

    Created opportunity for America's working class and minority citizens to pursue a higher education. Got the funds from the sale of federal lands to support new Land-Grant colleges and universities that taught agriculture, business, engineering, mechanics and home economics.

  • Smith Hughes Act of 1917

    gave money to secondary teachers to train people who wanted to work on the farm; Changed from home economics to FACS
  • Vocational Education Acts of 1963 and 1968

    funding for student organizations, special needs students, etc.
  • Carl Perkins Vocational Act of 1985

    targeted education towards special needs children and minorities
