    The First Public School

    On April 23, 1635 the first public school was established in the United States in Boston Massachusetts and was called Boston Latin School.
  • The First Deaf School

    The First Deaf School

    The first deaf school was actually a college and was founded in 1817 by Thomas Gallaudet. The college was called American School for the Deaf(ASD). It was originally in Connecticut, but then later got moved to Washington D.C.

    Brown vs. Board of Education

    On May 17th, 1954 the Supreme Court made it so children of color would no longer be forced into going to a non resourced Black only school.

  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine

    The Little Rock Nine was a group of nine Black students who was enrolled in a primary White high school in Little Rock Arkansas. When classes started in September the children went to the school causing President Eisenhower to send in federal troops to escort the nine kids into the school which then drew a lot of attention to the Civil Rights Movement.

    On September 2, 1958 the federal legislation passed a law by President Eisenhower that would provide founds to improve the American School systems and promote education.

    Ruby Bridges: The first Black Child to Desegregate a School

    On November 14, 1960 a little six year old named Ruby Bridges walked in to William Frantz Elementary School and then had to be escorted out by Federal Marshals and had to face a bunch of white protestors.

    Education for all Handicapped Children Act

    In 1975 there was an Act/law to support and protect the rights of meeting people's needs for improving the results for infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities along with the rest of their families. This act/law later was changed to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act(IDEA).

    When was the First Active Shooter Drills in Schools

    In 1999, active shooter drills were introduced to schools after the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999. This meant that schools would practice with people having fake guns and pretending to break in to rooms and the children practicing what they need to be doing when stuck in a classroom or the hallway.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind was a law that was focused on improving public primary and secondary schools and improving student performances in December 2001. Teachers were also held to more requirements and expectations and for their students and if the students did not meet the teacher's expectations than other things happened such as closure of the school.
