    Boston Latin School
    On April 23, 1635, the first public school opened in the United States- The Boston Latin School. This school was established to get boys prepared for college. The school was centered on humanities and taught Latin and Greek. Even though this school has undergone many changes, it is still open and educating students today!

  • Old Deluder Satan Act of 1647

    Old Deluder Satan Act of 1647
    The Puritans in Massachusetts passed this law because they highly valued literacy. At first this act just required that parents make sure their children could read, but then it went on to mandate community schooling. This law also required that towns of at least 50 families must hire a schoolteacher to instruct their children to read and write.

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown v. Board of Education reversed the decision of Plessy v. Ferguson. This Supreme Court case ruled that 'separate but equal' education was not actually equal. It declared racial segregation in schools to be unconstitutional. Not only was this ruling a huge step for the equality of education, but it was a huge step for the civil rights movement as well.
