    The Society to Encourage at home began a mass movement of correspondence courses. This resulted in women studying course work at home. Some critiques viewed this movement as a way to keep women at home to take care of the home and continue to not have their views heard.

    Chautauqua Grants Degrees to Students
    Chautauqua created a correspondence course that provided course work to pupils over the summer months at summer retreat locations. These grew popularity because they brought arts and culture to the rural areas.

    The National University Extension Association conducted the first study comparing the results of academic instruction versus correspondence classes.

    Latter Day Saints University in Salt Lake City was the first educational licence. It began the trend of 'schools of the air.'

    Through teleconferencing, two-way communication increased in distance learning. The ability to have discussions aided the learner in the acquisition of the new materials. It also allowed students to have questions answered more readily.

    Sugata Mitra conducts his ‘Hole in the Wall’ experiment in India, to study minimal invasive education. His research showed that children can learn how to use computers without any formal instruction. He found that if you put a computer in a place easily accessible to people they can teach themselves new material.

    Open Online Class Appears
    Shimon Schocken created a class regarding the elements of computing systems. He and his team created resources to build a computers starting with NAND and resulting in a Tetris game. They made the materials open and free to anyone who would like to participate resulting in one of the first MOOCs.

    Coursera is Founded
    An online institution that allows students to take MOOCs for free from colleges such as Princeton, Stanford, University of Michigan and other top colleges around the world.
