The invention of the transistor influenced the development of computers. In 1906, American inventor Lee De Forest created a device that could amplify signals. A telephone conversation could travel anywhere as long as there were amplifiers along the way. The early vacuum tubes that did the job were unreliable. The transistor however, could either work as an amplifier or a switch.

UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) was the first commercial computer. It predicted the outcome of the 1952 televised presidential election. It was developed by J.Presper Eckert and John Mauchly.
