Vargas was initially only supposed to be in power for a temporary period of time. However, he and his supporters were in charge of the entire government. They closed the Congress and ruled with an iron fist. There were several attempts to overthrow him such as the Constitutionalist Revolution in 1932 and a Communist uprising in 1935.

During the Estado Novo era, Vargas's position gained even more power. In this time period there were many accounts of police brutality and censorship against the press. After WWII in 1945, Vargas was overthrown in a military coup.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso developed a Plano Real to stabilize Brazil's economy. The plan was a success at curbing hyperinflation.
