On December 29, 1696, Willem de Vlamingh landed on Rottnest Island. This was the start of his exploration of central west coast of Austrailia, which was then called "New Holland."

On April 29, 1770, Lieutenant James Cook landed on the eastern side of Austrailia. He then charted it and claimed for Britain.

On January 16, 1788, the British colony of New South Wales was established. It consisted of over 1000 settlers, and many were convicts.

On May 3, 1803, Captain Matthew Flinders completed the first circumnavigation of Austrailia along with George Bass.

On February 19, 1851, gold was first sighted in Austrailia by Edward Hammond Hargraves. This caused many gold rushes in Austrailia until the beginning of the 20th century.

On Januray 1, 1901, the Commonwealth of Austrailia was established. This was the opening of the first Parliament in Austrailia.
