History of Anime

  • Estimated Creation of the First Anime

    The earliest anime created was titled "Katsudō Shashin" (motion pitcure). Estimated to have been produced between January 1, 1907 and 1911, it depicted a young boy in a sailor suit who writes the kanji "活動写真" ("Katsudō Shashin"), turns, removes his hat, and offers a salute. It wasn't until July, 2005 that this early anime was discovered and shown in Kyoto, Japan. The creator's identity is unknown and it was made for private viewing rather than public release.

  • World War II

    The Japanese government in this time, would urge animators to produce animation which enforced the Japanese spirit and national affliction. The military would also hire animators to make films showing the sly, quick Japanese forces winning against enemy troops. Most anime in this time period were used as propaganda.
  • Astro Boy Introduced

    The popular anime known as "Tetsuwan Atomu" ("Mighty Atom") in Japan or "Astro Boy" worldwide, started out as a manga(Japanese style comic book). It was later adapted to TV format that embodied what we now know as "anime".
  • Dragon Ball Series

    "Dragon Ball" was originally a manga series until it hit the air and became one of the most famous anime in Japan, coming out with three sequels to the original anime.
  • The First Space Opera Anime

    Inspired from the success of the "Star Wars" movies, "Space Battleship Yamato" was a special anime because it was the first anime space opera series.
  • Pokemon Craze

    Pokemon Craze
    Pokemon was created by Satoshi Tajiri and was released as a video game for GameBoy in 1996. An anime adaptation was released in Japan in 1997 and spread to America and a majority of the world in 1998. By 1999, Pokemon had become a major craze, becoming one of the most popular anime in Japan, America, and the world. After sixteen years, Pokemon still ongoing today. It is currently in its sixth generation, with new episodes coming out on Cartoon Network every Saturday.

    Doraemon, the First Anime Ambasador
    In 2008, Japan created the position of "Anime Ambasador" and appointed Doraemon, a popular anime robot cat that is afraid of mice(ironically), as the the first Anime Ambasador to promote anime worldwide.
