    After a period of terror and war, on May 7th 1945 German general Alford Jodl had now signed the formal documents of Germanys surrender in Reims, France. The Nazi's now surrendered to the Allies in the aftermath of the death of their leader. This event is also known as Victory in Europe day, as the three allies (Canada, Britain and USA) celebrated their
    victory on the European side of the war. This event is significant because it was the end of the european side of the war.

    After years of struggling with nationalist conflict, India and Pakistan gained independence in 1947, Pakistan on August 14th and India on 15th. The reason for the partition of these two countries was due to request of the states for one to have a Muslim majority (Pakistan) and the other, a Hindu majority.On this day by mom and dads parents migrated to Pakistan. If my grandparents had not migrated i would not have had a Pakistani backgroud or culture.

    On December 1st 1955, one brave woman by the name of Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man on a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama. By doing so she was charged and arrested for breaking the laws of segregation. Acclaimed a hero for her actions, she stood up for what she believed in, thus igniting the Montgomery Bus Boycott and also what is now considered the beginning of the modern civil rights movement.

    The Berlin wall built on 13th August 1961 in the dead of the night by construction workers and East German soldiers was an attempt to separate West and East Berlin. It was made as a symbolize and signify a divide between a communist government from a democratic government . All citizens on the east side of the wall were now doomed to fate of communism for almost three decades as they were now forbidden to leave.

    The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the United States and The Soviet Union had ever gotten to declaring war. October 14th 1962 US spy planes discovered that Soviet Leader Khrushchev had placed 40 medium-range nuclear-capable missiles in Cuba; the missiles were placed in such a position that if they were to be fired they would hit almost every major city in the US. In return the US created a sea blockade against Cuba; Khrushchev was also worried about the US nuclear weapons placed in Turkey.

    The End of The Crisis
    On October 26th 1962, Soviets (Khrushchev) after first denying that they had placed such weapons in Cuba agreed to remove the weapons in return for US (Kennedy) to promise to never attack Cuba again. A secret deal also resulted in the US weapons weapon’s being removed from Turkey. This event is significant because it saved the world from a nuclear war ready to take place.

  • The Great Flag Debate

    On June 15th 1964, the great Canadian flag debate began when Prime Minister Lester B Pearson proposed his plans for a new flag. The reason for the debate centered on the idea that while some Canadians were ready for a new flag, many felt an attachment to the mother country and its union jack. Conservative Leader John Diefenbaker also believed that union jack be incorporated into the new flag, while the Liberal and Democrats belived it should incorporate the maple leaf.

The new canadian flag consisted of a maple leaf in the middle with two red stripes at the edges, following canadas national red and white colours. This event is significant becuase it was the first day our Canadian flag was introduced.

    anything to get what they wanted and also put Canada through troublesome times.
