Harriet Tubman guided people throughout the journey, which led to many risks. The Wilmost Proviso was a goal was to ban slavery in any land that the United States might take from Mexico by David Wilmot. It occured during the Mexican American war, and was never made into law because the senate blocked it. This caused more of a split between the North and the South over slavery and eventually turned into the Civil war.

The Mexican-American War came to an end on February 2, 1848, with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The US gained more than 500,000 square miles of land. It also set up the Rio Grande as the border between the United States and Mexico. In return, the United States gave Mexico $15 million and took on $3.25 million in debts that Mexico owed to Americans. The treaty also guaranteed Mexican people living in the lost territory protection of their property and rights. -
The compromise of 1850 changed rules from the Missouri Compromise. It made a new rule that allowed popular soverinty in former mexican territory north as well as south of that line that made the people vote whether or not to have slavery. This meant all of the territory from the Mexican Cession, no matter if it was located north or south of the line of the Missouri Compromise would have the opportunity to vote on the issues of slavery.

The story Uncle Toms Cabin was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe on March 20th, 1852. This was a anti slavery novel. It focused on the detriment that slavery caused families. This novel had such big political impact that copies sold so quickly, and although they tried to ban it, the copies were being distrubuted too fast. 300,000 copies were sold in the united states in a year. Many people believe that this contained "falsehoods" and "disortions." (McPherson, 90) -

The Canning of Charles Summer happened when a congressman named Preston Brooks attcked Summer with a cane, brutally injuring him. He did this because summer had gave a speech about slevery and while doing so insulted Brooks relative.

Dred Scott, an enslaved man, had sued for his freedom after living in free territories.
