    In 1845 Mary and Michel Bourke were employed by FR James Hanly to be the first teachers at the school and they were a lay couple there were 56 students at the school. creating the first catholic school founded purely by the donated money by catholic community, at the time there were 1,000 settlers and ¼ of them were roman catholic. It was built quite close to where ST Stephan’s cathedral stands today.

    In this time Brisbane got its first permanent church called ST Stephan’s and after ten years ST Stephan’s was made the cathedral of the diocese of Queensland after separating from the colony of New South Wales.

    In 1861 Bishop James Quinn, 5 priests and 6 Irish sisters of mercy made there way to Brisbane on the Yarra Yarra. In small populated town Bishop Quinn was shocked on the poor mostly Irish population committed to help the economic and social status of the catholic through education. And mother Vincent witty and the sisters of mercy set up the first ever catholic secondary school in Queensland and the called the school all hallows.

    In 1868 St James school for boys which surprisingly was completely staffed by only lay teachers it was different but it did teach all the subjects. But there were religious and lay student teacher which got there training before and after school while also working in class as helpers during the day. But they did not have teacher training college and it would only be built in about 100 years. And it was called mauleys training college at the all hallows campus.

    In 1870 there was a lot of growth in the catholic church with the divide of the Irish catholic and English Prodi stance which gave a massive push to keep state and church separate and there were laws to allow all children free, compulsory and secular education and have no state funding for and catholic school.it was also around this time that Mary of the Cross Mackillop with the sisters of ST joseph arrived to city of Brisbane and started to teach.

    In this year, there was the great depression made this beautiful nation suffer through the challenges of widespread poverty and unemployment so allot of schools lowered their fees to help the people that suffered through this time in the great depression but the weird thing is that no schools were closed and all this was inspired by Australia first ever Saint ST Mary of the cross Mackillop beautiful message of “never see a need without doing something about it

    In this time, there were debates in the political parties saying that they should give founding to catholic schools and within 12 months the federal government gave the O.K for schools to be founded this was a first in 100 years that the government gave funding to catholic schools. In the 1960s there were fighting against lay teacher and catholic teachers, and they were only got 2 years training before they started entering the classroom

    This time was a difficult time because they introduced compulsory schooling until you were in in year 10. And the first Australian born archbishop Francis rush was appointed in this time and after 40 years of director of catholic education farther “Bernard O’Shea” was replaced by the first ever layer Ector “Vince or orc”.

    this time was a great time because prime minister Kevin Rudd introduced a promise on one-one technology to school so it could be easier for the kids to learn and keep up on technology in this time. And it could also be used to do test on and that kids won’t have to buy more book’s in the school year. And Rudd said some of the wealthiest schools in Australia are having the kids linked up with internet, and kids taking laptops to and from school and that he wants to see that a lot more.

    this time was great for north and south schools because they saw an expanding demand of the catholic education.they started expanding down south and up north because the people liked the catholic education in the arch dioses of Brisbane.This is good because they expanded to the gold coast which were I live and that’s good because people near the border will still get a lot of good education which can lead to great success with a job like a scientist, inventor and all the great jobs out there
