    The earthquake killed 830,000 people and is ranked as the third deadliest natural disaster of all time. The entire town of Huaxian was destroyed.     Robert E. Lee attacks in Union territory, hoping to draw in Maryland to the Confederacy and foreign aid but the battle ends in a stalemate and Lee loses 1/4 of his men. This battle was important because it was the bloodiest one-day battle in history, with more than 20,000 dead (History Alive!).

    Galveston Hurricane 1900
    On September 8, 2018, a now Category 4 hurricane hit Texas and killed 6,000 - 12,000 people, naming its self as one of the deadliest, most powerful hurricanes in history. Because of this, Galveston had never been able to recover and at the time, Texas' most thriving city was destoryed.     The Zimmermann Telegram was intercepted by the British and given to the Americans. It stated that Germany would fund an invasion of Mexico to keep the American out of the war (actual document).
  • 1940 Armistice Day Blizzard

    1940 Armistice Day Blizzard
    During the blizzard, 16 inches of snow fell on Minneapolis where the temperatures had dropped from 50s to single digits during a 24-hour timespan.     Eisenhower led U.S. soldiers to attack five beaches on D-Day. The U.S. captured all five beaches, Omaha being the hardest, and started the liberation of France (History Alive!)
  • Interstate Highway Act

    Interstate Highway Act
    Dwight D. Eisenhower came up with the Interstate Highway Act through a study conducted of problems with the highway. He said the government would pay for 30 percent of the project but states would have to raise the rest. Eisenhower talked about it in 1955 but it came to pass in 1956. Because of this, we now have a large highway system with paved roads, which allows more people to live wherever they want. (Eisenhower's message to Congress)
  • The Perfect Storm

    The Perfect Storm
    The Perfect Storm started on October 28, 1991, when it engulfed the remains of Hurricane Grace and continued to head towards the Northeast. As it made landfall, the hurricane reached the max winds of 78 mph and 30 feet waves making it not a very powerful storm but after it died down a little bit another storm came from its remains and hit Nova Scotia (https://weather.com/news/weather/news/perfect-storm-halloween-blizzard-1991).
