    Southern Colonies

    Public schools didn't exist at the time which meant only people with money could get in.
    Major event: Private schools were sponsored by the churches of England and boarding schools were for the rich, much like it still is today.
  • Middle Colonies

    Middle Colonies

    These colonies were more diverse than the Southern colonies. Since they were diverse they taught many religions to satisfy the people.
  • New England Colonies

    New England Colonies

    These colonies were homogeneous with their religion. They advocated from purity in their schools. These colonies viewed education as solely a means to spread gods commandments.

    The Colonial Period

    Education began in a colony called Jamestown named after King James of England. Their goal was to spread Protestantism to the new world which included teaching it in schools.

    The 1st American high school was The Boston Latin Grammar School. This school helped only boys prepare for the ministry or a career in law.

    During the early national period, the separate colonies became the United States of America. This country shaped its future through the Constitution and the Bill of Rights
  • Constitution Was Born

    Constitution Was Born

    The constitution played a major role in the education system.
    Major event: This created what is known as the separation of church and state because no religion should be placed above any other. The Bill Of Rights gave the states power over schools and it no longer fell on the government just like it is right now.

    It is named the "age of the common man because of two things:
    1. Andrew Jackson, hero of the war of 1812 was elected president.
    2. Westward expansion caused the population to double from 13 million to 32 million.
  • Influential Person Horace Mann

    Influential Person Horace Mann

    Horace Mann was a key figure in making education available to all children. From 1837 to 1848 he advocated for public education. Horace Mann built 50 new secondary schools, teachers salaries were raised 50%, and the compulsory school law was passed in 1852.
  • Redefining High School

    Redefining High School

    In 1892 the NEA appointed the committee of ten to examine and construct standards, programs, and methods for the school curriculum. In 19 18 they made a second committee for secondary education. They broadened high school to include basic skills, like reading, math and vocational education along with many other things.

    The Evolution Of American High School

    Before the 20th century, fewer than 10% of students progressed beyond elementary. Education caused high schools to go from a luxury to a necessity.
