Intelligence Tests Created
Alfred Binet, paired with Theodore Simon, created an intelligence test which gauged where individuals should be at with their knowledge based on their age. (Group, 2006) Without an IQ test it was unknown what should be learned and at what pace or age you are at. The test is still in use today and remains one of the most widely used intelligence tests. Evolution Theory
American Civil Liberty Union was the first to support educators to teach subjects other than the normal. John Scopes took upon the challenge of teaching Evolution Theory, created by Charles Darwin, but was later arrested which lead to the Scopes Monkey Trial (1925). (Group, 2006) Scopes was found guilty but years later it was over-tuned as it violated the First Amendment. This was key in the education system for a larger variety of subjects to be taught aside from biblical pieces. -
Brown V Board
During this time period "separate but equal" education was raised awareness to, in fact, not be equal. The trial deemed racial segregation of children in public schools as unconstitutional. Oliver Brown and his daughter, Linda Brown, were the head of this civil rights movement. (Editors, 2020) Without the awareness made by the Brown family, segregation could've continued longer not allowing everyone to an equal education which in return meant equal work opportunities. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
Gerald Ford put this act into place to make children with disabilities a more equal, fair, and free education. (Davis, 2007) Later, in 2004, it was renamed as the Individual Disability Education Act (I.D.E.A). (Education, 2020) I.D.E.A has been built upon from previous acts. Children who suffered from a disability were not being given a fair right to education. As time goes on, this act is sure to continually improve to help the needs of children with disabilities get a fair, free education. -
No Child Left Behind Act
Designed to create accountability systems of all minorities, use higher standards, and perform professional development of staff. It also increased and decreased the time spent in some subjects. This also mandated state testing and if scores were low, schools were punished with various effects such as a deficit in funding. (Group, 2006) This has created a lack of ability to create individualized learning for various students who don't fit under one umbrella or style of learning.
