Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He had a big impact on America overseeing the American Civil War, abolishing slavery and fundamentally changed the role of the federal government in American life and politics.

South Carolina Secedes from the Union
South Carolina was the first state to secede. They believed that Abraham Lincoln would govern only for the benefit of the North. They were scared that Lincoln would not let them have slaves and decided to leave the Union.

Battle of Gettysburg
This was the largest battle ever fought in the U.S and was a turning point for the Civil War. It started when Confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to invade the North for the second time as a way to end the war.

Freedman's Bureau
Was established to helped former black slaves and low income whites in the South. This provided them with food, housing, and medical aid.

Civil War Ends

Civil Rights Act

Reconstruction Act of 1867
This act organized the south into 5 military districts, and the states had to have a military leader from the north. They also had to get rid of the black codes, and ratify the 14th amendment.

Rutherford B. Hayes is declared president

Ellis Island Opens
Ellis Island opens as an immigration station. 17 year old, Annie Moore, was the first immigrant to be processed at the federal immigration depot. Ellis Island was the entry point for more than 12 million immigrants.

Panic of 1893
This was a serious national economical depression that was caused by a collapse of two of the country's largest employers, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the National Cordage Company.

Plessy v Ferguson
In 1890, Louisiana had passed a law that railroads companies must provide racially segregated accommodations. During this time Plessy, a man who was 7/8 Caucasian and 1/8 Black, refused to leave a passenger car designated for whites. This was impotent because it established racial segregation over the next half-century.

Henry Ford
In 1896 he built his first horseless carriage. He wanted to construct an affordable car which he did in 1908 creating the Model T car. This changed American society forever. Since this car was so affordable more people owned cars and the United States started to see a growth of the suburbs and the creation of a national highway system. Reference:
