This movement was advocated by Horace Mann. Common Schools Movement helped fund all the public schools with money from the public. Common School Movement pushed for positivity instead of punishment. -
The Brown V.S. Board of Education decision is handed down
This was a big turning point in not only education but racial segregation. A civil rights victory, that ruled all racial segregation in public educational facilities was unconstitutional. This was announced by U.S Supreme Court. -
Head Start Program
The Head Start program was set up to help families in need. That meant low income families. Head Start helped provide assistance in areas of emotional, social, health and psychological needs of the children and families. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
IDEA was a great stepping stone for children and families with disabilities. This allowed children into the schools, providing them the necessary tools needed for their individual learning needs. This is a four-part piece that ensures students with disabilities are provided with FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education). This act was previously known as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. -
No Child Left Behind
This act was pushed and proposed by President George W. Bush. This was in part of pushing for greater accountability on schools for poor performances and reward the schools for good student performance. This required minimum benchmarks based on the standardized tests provided.
