  • Normal Schools

    Normal Schools
    Created schools to trained high school graduates to be teachers. They were trained to be teachers for primary schools. The first normal school was founded in Concord, Vermont by Samuel Read Hall in 1823. This event continues to impact education today because without normal schools, there wouldn't have been a place for teachers to be trained. Normal schools have formed into universities, which allows people to get a degree in education.

  • Common School Movement

    Common School Movement
    An effort to fund schools with public dollars. It was started by Horace Mann in 1830. He believed that schools should be free and locally funded. This is relevant today because it allowed for public schools to be free for all children. Without Horace Mann, we might still have schools that aren't locally funded, which would allow many children to miss out on education due to parent's not having the money to send their children to school.

  • First State Board of Education

    First State Board of Education
    Established the first public high school and free public school to all grades. It was initiated by Horace Mann as he believed that education was the key to bridging social gaps and creating an equal society. It is important within history because it allowed for all children to get an education no matter their social class. This is still important today because without Horace Mann we might still be paying for public education for our children.

  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    Organized effort by black Americans to end racial discrimination. It started in 1954 and ended in 1968. During these years it remained mostly nonviolent. It is important within our education system because it allowed for less discrimination towards African Americans. It also allowed for African Americans to attend schools with white children. This is very important today because there is still a ton of discrimination towards black Americans.

  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    An act that required states to test students in reading and math during 3rd-8th grade and once again in high school. They were standardized test given to students to test their knowledge with the course material. It was aimed to improve public schools. Although this isn't in affect today, it is still an important part of history within education. This was a learning experience for all as it wasn't ideal to have a 'standard student'.
