Five Significant Advancements in American Education

  • Accessibility to Schools for ALL

    Accessibility to Schools for ALL
Mann and Branard believed that all children had a right to receive a public education provided and funded for by each state. They advocated for education to be required in every township across the country. Due to their promotion of public schooling, schools have developed to the point that they now offer and provide a public education to all children throughout the United States.
  • Child-Centered Education and Progressivism

    Child-Centered Education and Progressivism
As America moved away from requiring students to spew forth answers, the United States began moving toward ensuring that each child was taught in a manor in which they could learn best. This led to more real-life experiences in the classroom and out of the classroom creating a much stronger resource for retention in education. Allowing students to have some say in what they learn has led to training children to think freely and make knowledgeable decisions promoting a more democratic society.
  • Brown vs. the Board of Education

Brown vs. the Board of Education
The success of the court hearings brought an end to legal segregation in the schools. From this point forward schools were to accept and teach students of all races if parents chose to enroll them in their schools. The impact this has had on American society is that schools now include everyone without regard to numerous distinguishing factors including race, sexual preferences, and religious beliefs. America has embraced an understanding that everyone is human and therefore all are equal.
  • Education of All Handicapped Children Act

Education of All Handicapped Children Act
The EHA (renamed IDEA in 1990) has brought public recognition to the fact that everyone has the ability to contribute to our society no matter their age or abilities and should be encouraged to do so. As well, it recognized that everyone is deserving of an education no matter their age or ability. This also led to legislation requiring schools to provide adapted access within their facilities providing full accessibility for all abilities.
  • Development of the Internet

    Development of the Internet
The internet brought a new dimension to education. It now provides a more diverse opportunity for students of all levels and classes. Now, students of all backrounds can access education from anywhere. Education can be continued on the go or at home should a long term illness develop or an injury or surgical recovery become necessary. The internet now provides more options for students to complete or continue their education from elementary levels through college.
