  • The Father of Epidemiology

    John Snow was a physician from London who started studying cholera for decades. He is credited with stopping the outbreak of cholera in the 1854 outbreak in London. He provided strength to the study of epidemiology because he was the first to ever do it. Very important date in history for epidemiology.
  • Hygienic Laboratory

    A small laboratory on Staten Island was established to aid in infectious diseases among incoming ships. Was later moved to Washington, and evolved into the National Institutes of Health.
  • Immigration Act of 1891

    Required all immigrants entering the US to be given a health examination by physicians. Helps with controlling diseases that are passed from country to country.
  • Food and Drugs Act

    The food and drugs act was passed in 1906 as long with the federal meat inspection act. These two acts are huge in the food industry. Inspection of meats going on the market and the overall inspection of food and drugs. A huge step in US history.
  • First School of Public Health in the United States

    John Hopkins founds the first public health school in the United States. Harvard and the University of Michigan would later follow while being supported by the Rockefeller Foundation.
  • Influenza Pandemic of 1918

    Caused roughly around 25-50 million deaths worldwide
  • National Reporting of Disease

    Each state started participating in the reporting of disease. This is very crucial in knowing what states are having trouble and how to aid them in slowing the disease.
  • The Framingham Heart Study

    The goal was to identify factors relating to cardiovascular disease over a long period of time. Recruited both men and women who were willing to take tests and examinations to study factors contributing to cardiovascular disease. Helped with research and live exams on patients.
  • Department of HEW

    Under President Eisenhower, Congress created the department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Three of the biggest departments in the US government today.
  • Smallpox Eradicated

    Smallpox was eradicated by the World Health Organization. One of the most deadliest diseases last known case was in 1977 in Somalia.
  • Molecular Pathological Epidemiology

    The term molecular pathological epidemiology was first introduced combining pathology and epidemiology to understand how people react to diseases. Each person has a different disease process.
  • Control Strategies and Patient Treatment

    From information gathered from many diseases. A lot can be gained from infectious diseases and the use of epidemiology and molecular evolution.
