  • The Homestead Act of 1862

    The Homestead Act of 1862

    Congress passed this act hoping to develop the American West and help spread economic growth. This provided 160 acres of land to anyone who would agree to farm this land. The passing of this act along with the later Southern Homestead Act of 1866, encouraged much farming throughout the years of war.
  • The Thirteenth Amendment

    The Thirteenth Amendment

    The 13th Amendment states that "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
  • The Assassination of President Lincoln

    The Assassination of President Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States was assassinated on April 14th, 1865. He was attending the play "Our American Cousin" at the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. Lincoln was shot in the head by a man known as John Wilkes Booth.

    The Fifteenth Amendment

    The Senate passed this amendment on February 26, 1869 in a vote of 39 to 13. According to the Constitution of the United States, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." This was a huge step in a much better direction for those of color during this time period.

    The Gilded Age

    The Gilded Age was a time of vast amounts of economic growth and industrialization, especially for those of the Northern and Western United States. During this era, political corruption was also present and there was a focus on the fact that some individuals were wealthy while the rest were living in poverty.
  • Haymarket Square Riot

    Haymarket Square Riot

    The Haymarket Square Riot took place in Chicago, Illinois. A bomb went off after police were breaking up a rally in which workers were on strike advocating for 8-hour work days. This bomb killed many civilians and officers as well as created friction leading officers to fire at each other and the public making the death toll even higher. This event was somewhat counterproductive but did lead to the American Federation of Labor which was another important movement in time.

    Spanish American War of 1898

    America was involved in this war due to the explosion of the U.S.S Maine battleship as well as the due to American support of Cubans and Filipinos against all Spanish rule.

    The Roaring 20s

    A time period in American History filled with economic, social, and political change. For the first time ever, more Americans lived in the cities than on farms. The nation's economy and stock market were booming. People were spending money on enjoying themselves and enjoying different forms of entertainment.

    On August 26th, 1920, Congress passed the 19th Amendment. This states, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of sex."

    During this time period, the United States and the Soviet Union did not physically battle but rather antagonized each other in different ways. The use of propaganda, espionage, and military coalitions made this a painful time.

    The Great Depression

    The depression began when the Roaring 20s came to an end when the United States faced a huge decline in economic growth. The stock market crash of 1929 signaled a changing time as well. Unemployment reached 25% and banks were closing all over the place.
  • Scottsboro Boys Trial

    Scottsboro Boys Trial

    Two white women named, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates were riding the same freight train as the Scottsboro Boys when they took part in illegal sexual activity in Scottsboro, Alabama. These women wanted to avoid these charges so they falsely accused these Scottsboro Boys of rape.

    The New Deal

    During the first term of President Franklin. D Roosevelt, the New Deal was signed in an effort to re-inflate the economy. These efforts were in response to the depression and hoped to help those suffering and unemployed.
  • The Dust Bowl

    The Dust Bowl

    The Dust Bowl was also known as the "Dirty 30s" because it lasted for about a decade but the economic effects lasted far longer. Severe droughts hit the Midwest and Great Plains and dust storms began. These storms would fill the sky creating darkness for days, and would seep into homes, on food, clothing, and furniture. Farming and agriculture suffered tremendously as well and many did not recover.

    Pearl Harbor

    A United States Naval Base that faced a surprise attack by Japanese forces. The Japanese fighter plans descended onto the base destroying navy vessels, battleships, hundreds of airplanes, and killed more than 2,400 Americans, many were civilians. The day after this attack the United States declared war on Japan.
  • D-Day

    D-Day

    The operation of D-Day was brought together by land, air and sea forces. This invasion force delivered 5 naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy France. This was part of the effort to defeat Nazi Germany and end World War II.
  • Malcolm X

    Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was a minister and major leader during the civil rights movement, who supported black nationalism. His stance was that those of the black community should protect themselves against any white aggression no matter what it takes. He has a much more violent approach rather than a more peaceful one as Martin Luther King Jr. did.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education

    In this case, the Supreme Court finally ruled that separating children in public school due to race was unconstitutional. This segregation had negative effects on the personal and educational growth of African American children. This overruled the Plessy vs Ferguson case "separate but equal."

    Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War was a very long, costly war that stemmed from communist North Korea against South Korea and its ally, the United States. The United States was afraid of communist takeover of the country which is why getting involved was also so crucial.
  • Freedom Summer

    Freedom Summer

    This was a voter registration drive to increase the number of black voters in Mississippi. College students flooded Mississippi from all different races and backgrounds to promote black voter involvement in the state.
