    California Gold Rush

    The discovery of gold created a hope for people outside of the homesteading part of the West. If people were lucky to find gold, they had instant riches. Strikes would happen on new sites, these were many people going to one site to hopefully mine for some gold. If the crowd was large enough a town would form.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act

    With the Homestead Act, any head of house hold aged 21 or older, including unmarried women, can receive a 160 acre plot of land. The only requirement was within the next five years the individual had to "improve the land".
  • Impeachment of President Johnson

    Impeachment of President Johnson

    Washington D.C. has had enough with President Johnson. He vetoed a lot of things which cause tension in Washington D.C. President Johnson was also a White supremacist who's racism furthered the divide between himself and congress. The impeachment was dropped but President Johnson was silenced.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th Amendment made it where everyone who was born or naturalized in the U.S. is now a legal U.S. citizen. This amendment also includes former enslaved individuals by eliminating the three-fifths compromise.
  • Molly Maguires

    Molly Maguires

    A group of miners formed and called themselves Molly Maguires. They focused on bringing attention to how miners were treated through aggressive acts like kidnapping. This was to make the owners have to listen to them.
  • The Great Migration

    A large majority of African Americans moved North instead of going West, this was deemed the Great Migration. This migration from the South was due to the continued hatred and racism coming from the people of the South, even after the new laws and rights were passed.
  • 15th Amendment

    Although this seemed like a step forward, many women saw it a disappointment. The 15th Amendment focused on voting rights. The right to vote, under this amendment, is not allowed to be denied to anyone based on race, color, or if they were previously slaves. Excluding gender made a big impact on the Women's Suffrage movement.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre

    When U.S. soldiers attempted to disarm a group of Lakota, 150 Lakota people lost their lives. When a Lakota individual placed down their weapon an American solider started to fire.
  • Coxey's Army

    Coxey's Army

    Jacob Coxey led a group of around 500 men from Cincinnati, Ohio to Washington D.C. They went to protest to congress to hire unemployed individuals to work on public projects and build or rebuild roads. However, Jacob Coxey and others were arrested for trespassing on the grass.
  • Open Door Notes

    Open Door notes were introduced by Secretary of State Hay to have access to China's markets. If approved, this would open free trade with no tariffs or transportation controls.
  • Liberty Bonds

    Liberty Bonds

    To help pay for the costly war, the Liberty Loan Act was passed. Basically, American people would lend their money to the government and in return receive a liberty bond.

    In 1919, the 19th Amendment was passed. This amendment prohibited voter discrimination based on gender, now allowing women to vote.

    Prohibition

    Prohibition was a time during the 1920s where alcohol was banned. Multiple organization tied alcohol consumption to societal problems causing the ban.

    The Second Ku Klux Klan

    By 1924, the Second KKK had more members in the group than in the labor unions. The group was mainly focused in the South and still had the same goals of instilling fear and violence.
  • Black Tuesday

    Black Tuesday

    Black Tuesday was the day that the stock market lost over $14 million dollars with sixteen million shares. Banks had more in the stock market than average American families resulting in a lot of banks having to close.
  • The Social Security Act

    The Social Security Act

    This was and still is the country's safety net. The main goal of the Social Security Act was to protect the Americans that were most vulnerable like the elderly, disabled, the young, and the unemployed.

    On June 6, 1944 many troops including American, British, Canadian invaded Paris, France which was occupied by Nazis.

    The focus of the GI Bill was to help troops returning from World War II get back into regular day to day lives.
  • Fight for Gay Rights

    A lot of the fights and struggles that occurred in the 1960s created the base layer for the rights we see today's rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
  • President Kennedy Assassinated

    President Kennedy Assassinated

    On November 22, 1963, while in Dallas, President Kennedy was fatally shot and later pronounced dead. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrest for the crimes but later was murdered and never tried for the charges.
