Through the video interview with Kristi Quillen I began to recognize a new meaning of a hero. Quillen portrayed a hero through her inspiring story about self sacrifice to help others by joining as a volunteer to a Peace Corp.

    Hero's Journey Assignment
Today we were given the news of a new assignment; to find a hero of society that would not normally be classified as a hero. This hero had to be a unique and living person who does not fit the characteristics of a usual hero such as the classical heroes.(Batman, Superman, or Flash) This hero should not be a common hero but a person with unique characteristics that a real hero would portray.

    Library Choosing My Hero

During these two days we spent a class period researching a hero to use for our projects in the library. I was certain that I wanted to do a fashion designer because I felt there was much to learn from designers such as Dior or Vera Wang. I had an idea that they would be good examples of heroic qualities due to their great success. I wanted to learn about how they got where they are now and what difficulties they encountered. It was difficult choosing between these two successful people.

    My Hero- Marya Hornbacher
The day I finally chose between my too designers, my friend Suhaila introduced me to a book named Wasted by Marya Hornbacher. She had me interested after giving me a brief plot of this book. The book was about Marya’s journey through her struggles of bulimia and anorexia at extremely young ages. I could not understand how someone could simply damage their own bodies the way many girls do around my age group. I wanted to read this book to go within the mind of someone who has suffered through thi

    Reading

I began reading my book and realizing that she was not very different from many girls. This taught me how anyone can get caught in this whirl and make themselves believe it was all "okay" the same way my hero did when she was young. Many thoughts she has had have crossed my mind as well, she sadly took those thoughts to an extreme which caused her bigger problems throughout her life.

First Blog Due- How I Chose My Hero
My first blog assignment was to blog about how I came to choosing my hero. I explained why I changed my mind about choosing a designer and why instead I chose a woman who tells her story in detail with complete honesty. Any girl could relate to her , bulimic or not. I feel that any girl has had many of her thoughts cross their minds and felt pressured by society and the media; making them believe they may not be good enough.

2nd Blog Post Due- Heroes in Literature
For my second blog we were assigned to write about heroes in literature and in our own lives. I included my childhood hero and examples from The Book Thief and Tale of Two Cities. I was beginning to thoroughly understand what a true hero is and what qualities one may have to make good actions to benefit others before themselves.

    Share Something from your Biographies
Today I did not get the chance to share something from my hero's biography. But I would have shared a bit of page 59. She writes about her thoughts she had of bulimia when she was only twelve and what she told herself to force her into thinking throwing up was “okay” and it would not have any effect on her because she had not suffered through anything yet. This quote made me truly understand why she had been in denial for so long.
  • Interview of my hero online

    Interview of my hero online
While reading my book I began to be more interested in Hornbacher’s life and researched more about this incredible woman. I found a YouTube video in which she is being interviewed; she talks about another book she had written named “Madness” talking about her bipolar disorder. This woman can relate to millions of people with these similar situations and hardships she encountered. I am be fond of the way she explains everything witch such honest detail and the new prespective of judging others.
