The anti-Semitic laws extended all the way to Australia when Hitler takes the country.

After the Munich Agreement, Hitler’s forces extended the border regions of Czechoslovakia.

November 9th, 1938 is the Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass). This was the anti-Semitic riots and destruction of Jewish institutions in both Germany and Austria. The result was that 26 000 Jews were sent to concentration camps and all of the Jewish children were expelled from schools.

Jewish people were evil and a bad influence, so from then on the Brady family had to live under new rules. Jewish people could only leave their houses at certain times of day, due to the Nazi’s travel restrictions. This meant that they could no longer visit family members, go outside of town or go shopping at few stores at certain times due to the restrictions. The Nazis also confiscated their father’s radio.

Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939 and the Nazis took over the empty town, Danzig. As a result, Britain and France gave Hitler an ultimatum. When he ignored them, war was declared on September 3rd, 1939.

As the war continues, Einsatzgruppen (mobile killing squads) followed the German army into conquered lands, rounding up the Jews and all other “undesirables”.

Nazis declared that Jewish children could no longer attend school. Hana’s parents had to hire a tutor for Hana and an old refugee professor for George. Hana and George could no longer see or play with their friends.

Spring 1941:
Hana and George’s mother, Marketa, is arrested by the Gestapo (Hitler’s secret police.) and transported to Ravensbrück (a women’s concentration camp). -
Autumn 1941:
George and Hana’s father, Karel Brady, comes home with three squares of cloth. Each has the star of David on them. He cut the stars out and told his children that they had to wear them whenever they left the house. -
Karel is taken away by the Gestapo along with all the other Jewish men in Nove Mesto, leaving Hana and her brother alone. Uncle Ludvik and Aunt Heda took Hana and George to live with them. Karel is taken away by the Gestapo along with all the other

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, and as a treacherous result, the U.S. and Britain declared war on Japan. Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S.

Many people died in Auschwitz, the dreadful concentration camp where the Nazis normally used Zyklon-B poison to murder innocent people.

Hana and George received a letter ordering them to the deportation centre in Trebic on May 14th, 1942.

The Bauhaus artist, Friedl Dicker-Brandeishova, was deported to Theresienstadt where she taught art to hundreds of children. One of them, was Hana Brady.

Hana celebrates her 11th birthday on the way to the concentration camp, Theresienstadt (known as Czech in Terezin). During the war, over 140 000 Jews were sent to Theresienstadt, and 15 000 of those were children. These children eventually passed through to camps like Auschwitz and less than 300 survived.

Hana and George had arrived at Theresienstadt and from there, they were separated. George was sent to the boy’s barracks, and Hana to the girl’s barracks located in former schools.

George and Hana’s grandmother, Emma arrives at Theresienstadt. Without nutrition and proper medical care, she passed away after only 3 months from fatal illness.

George and Hana’s father, Karel is sent from the Iglau Gestapo prison to Cejl prison to Brno and then ultimately Auschwitz where he is killed on July 14th, 1942.

George and Hana’s mother, Marketa is sent from Ravensbrück to Auschwitz and is killed on October 29th, 1942.

The Soviet army liberated Majdanek death camp in Poland.

George is sent to Auschwitz on the first of ten transports from Terezin to Auschwitz.

D-day-The Allies launch Normandy invasion against the Axis Powers. Allied countries including the U.S., Britain, USSR, Australia, Canada, China, New Zealand and auxiliary armies from occupied countries.
Axis powers included Germany, Italy and Japan. -
Hana was sent to Auschwitz on the second-last transport to leave Terezin to Auschwitz. Hana is sent promptly to the gas chamber shortly after she arrived. She was never reunited with George again.
