The development came from raising concerns starting with women prenatal care and to reduce birth defects and delivery problems. In the mid 1900 century physicians perform a limited variety of successful operations surrounding pregnant mothers

    The first ovarian cystectomy was performed in 1809 that was later followed by a hysterectomy performed a few years later. The first successful c-section was performed by Jesse Bennett in 1769. Years later, the department of obstetrics was founded in 1899 at Washington University with Dr. Henry serving as it’s Head.

    In 1906 the lower segment operation was introduce because it was less risk in uterine rupture. The first screening test was developed in 1941 by George Nicolas Papanicolau. Examinations of cervical and vaginal secretions was used to detect cancer of the cervix and uterus.

Physicians had to go through a series of certifications and hands on training to practice in hospitals has advanced over the years were gynecology and obstetrics are more complex to obtain. An individual must complete an undergraduate to get a bachelors degree. Than they must complete medical school for 4 years and a residency for another 3-7 years.

    Epidural became popular instead of spinal or inhaled anesthesia. 3D ultrasound machines are much better when viewing and identifying abnormalities. Microscopes are used to look at cells from swabs of the cervix and uterus. This enables providers to improve diagnoses.
