    The Catholic Church under Archibishop Arellano opposes Decree 900. They fear the land they will lose will lessen their influence with the citizens of Guatemala. Also as allies of United Fruit Company this opposition shows that they support United Fruit over the poor of Guatemala

    Arbenz portraying himself to the Guatemalan people as an FDR style president enacts Decree 900. The goal of this plan is to ensure more Guatemalans can own land. Arbenz himself will lose 2500 acres under the deal.

    Unable to buy arms from the U.S. Arbenz, an effort to appease the military, purchases WWII era firearms from Czechoslovakia. This move is used as proof to the world that Arbenz is a communist wanting to deal with the Soviets vs its neighbor the U.S.
