  • The day it started.

    Stephen Grover Cleveland was born March 18, 1837 in Caldwell New Jersey. He was one of nine minister children. He was raised in upstate New York with his very large family. His mother Ann Neal and father Richard Falley Cleveland. His father died when he was only 16, so Grover finished high and went to work with his brother at the New York Institute for Special Education, then he went to work as a clerk and part-time law student while in Buffalo. This helped him pass the bar

    The pony express was basically men who rode around on horses delivering mail. It was an official thing in 1860. The riders started out in Missouri, and California.

    Grover Cleveland became Mayor of Buffalo. Grover later became Governor of New York. As Governor he was known as "Uncle Jumbo" because of his large size.

    This was the begging of Cleveland's first term of presidency. At first Cleveland was very uncomfortable with being in the white house all by him, so he married his ward, the daughter of his ex law partners. Which she becomes the youngest first lady at the age of 21. This was also the first and only White House president wedding. He got to do the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, and he got to see Geronimo surrender, ending the Apache war.

    Grover agreed with the act and signed it on January/19/1886. The act made it so that if both the president and vice president are unable to proceed as president that the heads of the executive department would resign as president. It really depended on their possession in the department if they would actually be eligible to become president.

    Geronimo was Native American Warrior. He was the last Native American warrior to surrender to the United States. Geronimo surrendered in Skelton Canyon, Arizona. Geronimo was also an Apache warrior. This date also represented the end of the Apache war.

    This is when Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty. He presented it as being a gift from the country of France and the people of France.

    The Interstate Commerce Act was passed by congress in 1887. This act made the railroads the first regulated fedural regulation. Congress passed this act mainly because people wanted the railroads to be regulated and they were not going to let it go.

    The Dawes act was also known as the General Allotment Act. Congress passed the act in 1887. The act allowed the president to survey Native Americans tribal land and divides it up to individual Native Americans.

    The Texas Seed Act was supposed to help farmers that were effected by the drought. Cleveland vetoed the act because he thought that it made the government appear to be overstepping their bounds.

    On June/13/1888 the Department of Labor is established. The department of labor basically was created so that workers know their rights. It also helped to protect the workers so that if things go wrong they have a back up plan.

    On February/11/1889 Cleveland signed a bill that created the department of agriculture. This department basically is to help protect food production. It also is used to aid farmers, and make sure the end product comes out good for the common consumer.

    Ruth also known as "Baby" was the first child Grover and Frances. She was born between his two terms, But she was a very sickly child and died at the age of 12, she died of diphtheria. They also asy that the candy bar "Baby Ruth" was nameds after her.

    Grover Cleveland finally gets his chance to be president. Grover while begning his term had to face a new depression. He faced the tresury crisis head on instead of buisness failure, farm mortgage forclosure, or even unemployment. He was the first president to have two terms that were not consecutive.

    The Sherman SIlver purchase Act
    Grover Cleveland repealed the act because he believed that the act was going to cause an uproar. Grover believed that the silver act had something to do with the large amount of panic through out the country. He wanted to hold back on the act to try and calm the country down.

    Esther was the second child of Grover and Frances. She was born in the white house and she was the first presidents child to be born there.She got married on March 14, 1918, at Westminster Abbey, she married Captain William Sidney Bence Bosanquet. Her daughter was the British philosopher Philippa Foot. Esther died at the age of 86.

    Richard Folsom Cleveland

    Son of President Grover Cleveland and Frances Cleveland. Richard would serve as an officer in the Marines during World War I. After his service was over he went to Princeton University and graduated from there in 1919. After his graduation he went on to study law at Harvard Law School where he graduated in 1924. He became a successful lawyer in Baltimore and lived in the city his entire life. In 1967 he became a delegate to the Maryland state constitutional convention.

    Francis Grover Cleveland

    Son of President Grover Cleveland and Frances Cleveland. Francis graduated from Harvard University and briefly taught English and history at Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge before embarking on a stage career. He spent several years acting in theater productions in Boston and New York City. He had brief runs on Broadway making cameo appearances in "Dead End' and "Our Town". He was Married for 67 years to Alice and his daughter is Marion C. Cohen.
